Following appeals from different persons and groups to the federal government of Nigeria for the release of detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Traditional Spokesperson of Ndigbo (Onuigbo Ndigbo Gburugburu), Chief Engr Ejike Iwu has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to extend joy to Ndigbo by releasing Kanu.

Speaking with newsmen in Owerri, Imo State, Onuigbo Ndigbo Gburugburu said that President Tinubu should make Ndigbo feel some sense of joy by unconditionally releasing the detained IPOB leader.
Chief Iwu has consistently been clamouring for the release of the detained Kanu and had earlier posited that “the South East which had been encumbered and under the pains of the weekly sit-at-home every Monday, should be liberated by the release of Mazi Kanu, adding that such a gesture will never be forgotten and will be a good start towards carrying the marginalized people along in his administration”.
He urged Ndigbo to calm down and be patient as God is at work because their enemies are at work, adding that he who laughs last laughs the best.
Onuigbo Ndigbo Gburugburu further stated that Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide in the United States of America, had recently written an open letter to President Tinubu on the same issue, adding that President Tinubu as a democrat should tow the path of honour that will distinguish him from the previous administration which refused to obey the ruling of the judiciary in releasing the detained Kanu.
It will be recalled that members of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide in the USA in a letter addressed to Tinubu, which was signed by Dr H. U. Nwachukwu and Dr P.O. Egwom, Chairman and Secretary respectively, expressed concern over the recent judicial pronouncement on Kanu’s bail application and his continued detention in DSS custody.
Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide in the US said: “It is important to recall that the Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Fagbemi, SAN, withdrew treasonable/terrorism charges leveled against Chief Sunday Igboho and the leader of Miyetti Allah Hore, Abdullahi Bello Bodejo. The Boko Haram by their agenda is to dissolve the Nigerian state and replace it with a regressive Talibanic theocracy rule, which is even more dangerous than the IPOB philosophy of ‘self-determination’ as enshrined in the United Nations charter.
“However, it is disheartening to note that both Bodejo and Igboho have been pardoned and are now free members of the society, while Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is still under detention in the DSS”.
Also lawmakers from different parts of the country under the aegis of Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South-East, had urged president to direct Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation, to invoke section 174 of the 1999 constitution to release Kanu.
