The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has announced that the delayed Easter Pilgrimage exercise will commence on September 14, 2025, at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State.
The airport, now equipped with an extended runway, and night landing facilities will serve as the departure hub for Christian pilgrims embarking on the sacred journey.
The NCPC Executive Secretary, Bishop Stephen Adegbite revealed that the flag-off ceremony will mark a significant moment for the commission and the pilgrims, who will be traveling to holy sites as part of the spiritual exercise.
The choice of Owerri as the starting point underscores the strategic importance of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, which has undergone significant upgrades to accommodate larger aircraft and ensure smoother operations for such events.
The Pilgrimage, originally scheduled earlier in the year, was postponed due to conflict considerations but is now set to proceed with Owerri as a key departure point.
The extended runway at the airport enhances its capacity to handle increased air traffic, ensuring a seamless experience for the pilgrims and reinforcing Imo State’s growing role as a hub for economic activities. The NCPC expressed gratitude to the Imo State government and relevant stakeholders for their support in facilitating the takeoff event.
The Commission also urged pilgrims to adhere to guidelines and prepare for a spiritually fulfilling journey. As the September 14 flag-off approaches, the NCPC is finalizing arrangements to ensure a successful pilgrimage, with further details to be communicated to participants and the public in due course.
