The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the recent directive issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on April 17, 2026, describing it as a veiled attempt to gag the media and undermine editorial independence.
In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Achike Chude, the union criticized the NBC’s demand for “strict and uncompromised compliance” over alleged breaches of professionalism, warning that the directive could create a climate of fear and encourage self-censorship among journalists.
The NUJ argued that restrictions on anchors expressing opinions and the classification of such actions as punishable offences amount to undue interference in the internal operations of media organizations.
Citing Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution, the union reaffirmed that freedom of expression is a fundamental right and urged the NBC to engage media stakeholders through dialogue rather than threats.
The union also called on journalists to remain professional and resolute in carrying out their constitutional duty to inform the public.
