The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has passed a vote of confidence in the Director-General of the Department of State Services, citing improved relations with the media and a noticeable decline in intimidation, harassment, and arbitrary arrests of journalists.

In a Communique after the NEC meeting held in Abuja Wednesday 28th April, 2016, NUJ urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to emulate the DSS, stressing that both the media and security institutions share a common responsibility in advancing national interest.

On insecurity, NEC called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive steps to address the rising wave of attacks and killings across the country.

It emphasized the need for a review of current security strategies and cautioned against politicizing security challenges.

The NUJ NEC also commended Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited for rewarding over 100 retired journalists in Bayelsa State with cash gifts, describing the gesture as unprecedented. It further acknowledged the role of Ovieteme George of the Arise News in facilitating the initiative.
