◾Harps on need for Quality Control and Accountability
Following the reported collapse of some section of the roof of the newly built and commissioned Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre (EIICC) in Owerri recently, a political group, The Mazi Organisation (TMO), has described the development as “embarrassing and ridiculous”.
In a press statement signed by Cajetan Duke JP, TMO Spokesperson, noted that the collapse occurred barely weeks after President Bola Tinubu commissioned the facility on September 30, 2025.
The statement reads; “Indeed, the sudden collapse of the EIICC points to the fact that the project is either a victim of poor and faulty architectural design or building engineering.
“The Mazi Organization,TMO, has observed with dismay the sudden collapse of a section of the newly commissioned Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre, EIICC, in Owerri, captured by trending video clips on various social media platforms.
“As a responsible and upright organization, TMO did not take it at face value, hence we decided to visit the site to establish the veracity of the embarrassing images in the trending video.
“Alas, we were shocked and rattled by what we discovered following our fact finding mission – the sudden collapse of the newly commissioned and over hyped EIICC.
“It is embarrassing and ridiculous to note that this occurred barely weeks after President Bola Tinubu commissioned the facility on September 30, 2025, amid unnecessary pomp and pageantry.
“Indeed, the sudden collapse of the EIICC points to the fact that the project is either a victim of poor and faulty architectural design or building engineering.
“We view this incident as stark revelation of the endemic culture of substandard projects in Imo State, which appears to be a deliberate mechanism for the embezzlement of public funds.
“The collapse of the so-called state-of-the-art convention centre—which was built with the intent to showcase progress and development but whose actual cost, the state government has, in its characteristic manner, deliberately refused to disclose, raises serious questions about the integrity of other infrastructure under the Uzodimma-led administration in the state.
“We therefore call on the Imo State Government to take immediate action to address the glaring issues of quality control and accountability as this will ensure that all ongoing and future projects meet the required highest standards of quality and safety, while giving our people real value for taxpayers’ money.
“Furthermore, we urge Imolites to continue holding government accountable through active citizen engagement and participation in the affairs of the state.
“TMO as a better and credible alternative, seizes this opportunity to reassure the great people of Imo State of our commitment to the development of the state and to their welfare even as we will always amplify their voices”.
