The Labour Party, LP in Imo State has passed a vote of confidence on her governorship candidate and party Chairman, Evang Joseph Ukaegbu and Nze Cyril Akujobi respectively.

At a state executive council meeting recently held in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the Lamidi Apapa-led LP in the state, expressed absolute confidence on Ukaegbu’s capacity and ability to emerge victorious in the November 2023 governorship election in the state.

In the same vein, the party passed a vote of confidence on the state chairman Nze Cyril Akujobi, as well expressed satisfaction over his reinstatement as well as the reintegration of members the party believes were forced out by ‘successive illegitimate leaderships of the party in the state.’

In a 12-point communiqué signed by both the chairman, Nze Akujobi and Secretary, Eluke Angus Uchenna, the party said: “Following recent developments in the national leadership of the party which led to the suspension of the party’s embattled national chairman, Barr Julius Abure, and emergence of Alhaji Bashiru Lamidi Apapa as acting national chairman, the council passed a vote of confidence in Apapa for his resolute commitment towards repositioning the party across Nigeria.

“The council passed a vote of confidence in the Apapa-led National Working Committee of the party for embracing openness, fairness, equity, and justice in the administration of the party in Nigeria.

“Council also commended the acting national chairman of the party, Alhaji Bashiru Lamidi Apapa, for reinstating the democratically elected chairman of the Labour Party in Imo State, Nze Ikechukwu Cyril Akujobi in order to rescue, recover, and save the party from being further plundered by political adventurers, invaders, and hijackers.

“In the same vein, council passed a vote of implicit confidence in the reinstated chairman of the party in the state, Nze I. C. Akujobi as he initiates the process of reunification of party members bullied out of the party by successive illegitimate leaderships of the party in the state.

“Council further passes a vote of confidence in the party governorship candidate for the November 11 Imo governorship election, Evangelist Joseph Ikechukwu Ukaegbu, expressing absolute confidence in his capacity and ability to win the forthcoming Imo governorship election.

“In view of the November 11, 2023 off-season Imo governorship election, council appealed to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party led by Alhaji Bashiru Lamidi Apapa, to aid the party in the state, to enable it kick-start gubernatorial election campaigns in Imo State as soon as possible.

“The council resolved to accord unalloyed support to the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Mr Peter Obi, in his continued resolute effort to reclaim his mandate through the judiciary and make sure he plays a fatherly role to the party critically.

“The council equally adopted a motion urging the state chairman of the party, Nze I. C. Akujobi to immediately see to the removal and replacement of any member of the State Working Committee, zonal or LGA of the party found to be unfit, incapable, inefficient, ineffective, and incompetent in the discharge of his or her official duties for the party to move forward.

“Considering the closeness of the governorship election in the state, council, by way of resolution, urged the state chairman of the party, Nze I. C. Akujobi, to step up action towards addressing the grievances of the party’s aspirants who were swinddled, defrauded, and shortchanged by the inglorious successive leaderships of the party in the state.

“It was the resolve of the council that all national officers of the party from Imo State should identify with the leadership of the state chapter of the party for proper recognition and collaborative efforts to move the party forward in the state.

“Regarding the crises currently rocking the party at the national level, the council passed a resolution, urging the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, to embark on peace and conflict resolution process in order to harmonize the party for it to move forward.

“Finally, in order to discharge the enormous tasks, duties, activities, functions, and responsibilities of the party effectively, council, through a resolution, urged the state chairman of the party, Nze I. C. Akujobi, to immediately constitute all constitutionally approved standing and ad-hoc committees to consolidate the progress already achieved by the party under his watch within a short period of time.”
