The Anglican Bishop of Amichi Diocese in Anambra State, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor, has called on government at all levels to create an enabling environment for journalists and media houses to operate freely in the country.
Speaking in his keynote address at the Annabel Event Centre during the 2026 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, the Bishop urged authorities to put an end to the incessant harassment and intimidation of media practitioners by government officials. He also called for media subsidies and grants to support journalists and media organisations, while urging the media to think outside the box in the pursuit of true independence.
His Lordship said journalists who conduct themselves like business reporters have no place in the profession, and challenged practitioners across the country to see themselves as advocates for the masses rather than tools for politicians, giving voice to the voiceless.
He described journalism as a calling and the backbone of every other profession, insisting that journalists must always tell the truth, whatever the consequences. “The truth is the torch that burns the hands of those who try to extinguish it,” he said, adding that the nation needs journalists committed to the ethics of their profession.
Turning to the menace of fake news, the Bishop said journalists who sacrifice truth for personal gain and brown envelopes are more dangerous than terrorists, noting that truth remains the ultimate tool for holding leaders accountable. “Any society where journalists report with truth will keep government and governance on their toes,” he said.
The National President of NUJ, Alhassan Yahya and the Vice President, South East (Zone C), Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku JP were accompanied to the event by other national officers from.the zone as well as the zonal Chairmen. The colourful ceremony also featured awards to deserving personalities.
