Abia govt set to re-jig education sector

The government of Abia State has laud out plans that will rejig the quality of education in the state.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, Governor Alex Otti has directed that recruitment of teachers should continue to enable the state have enough teachers in all government schools in the state.

This, Prince Kanu said is part of the Governor’s desire for free and qualitative education in the state.

He disclosed that the state government had equally has setup a 30-man Committee of persons drawn from Universities and stakeholders in Education matters for the recruitment of teachers, adding that 180 persons with disability have been engaged in special areas, such as the sign interpreters and instructors for the blind among others.

According to the Information Commissioner; “as a thinking and responsible government, the Governor has given another chance to teachers who were unable to partake in the recent recruitment of teachers exercise.”

The government, he said, had has also warned principals and head teachers who are still collecting fees from parents as school fees to stop henceforth, noting that Free Education from primary to junior secondary School is in place in the state.

Prince Kanu further disclosed that the state will train 2,200 teachers beginning from 19th of April, 2025.

Lending his voice, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi reiterated that government has warned that principals and head teachers caught collecting fees from parents will be penalized and risk losing their lose jobs.
