The Abia State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ABSPHCDA) in its quest to provide quality healthcare services to the people of the state. Deputy Governor Engr Ikechukwu Emetu FNSE made this pledge during the 4th quarter 2025 Task Force meeting held at the Government House in Umuahia, emphasizing the state’s determination to strengthen its primary healthcare system.

Engr Emetu, who chairs the State Task Force on Primary Health, lauded ABSPHCDA’s outstanding performance, which earned it the top spot in the South East zone. He attributed the achievement to Governor Dr. Alex Otti’s visionary leadership and the Agency’s dedication to excellence. The Deputy Governor also reaffirmed the state’s decision to abolish traditional birth practices, urging pregnant women to seek healthcare services in government-established facilities to ensure safe deliveries.

Dr. Kalu Ulu Kalu, Executive Secretary of ABSPHCDA, expressed gratitude to the state government for its steadfast support, crediting Governor Otti’s administration for the Agency’s success. He appealed for timely release of funds to facilitate outreach programs and expand coverage, enabling the Agency reach more communities.

Representatives from the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, and other partners praised the state government’s healthcare achievements and recommended deploying trained medical personnel to optimize the use of medical equipment in Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the state.

The meeting, attended by major stakeholders in the state Primary Healthcare Agency, focused on strategies to enhance healthcare services and address challenges facing the sector.
