)In a landmark event held on October 24 and 25 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) convened a powerful assembly of journalist leaders from across the continent, dedicated to addressing the pressing intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and the journalism profession. Supported by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the European Union (EU), this two-day dialogue focused on fostering responsible AI use and securing decent working conditions for journalists, acknowledging that both elements are crucial for a thriving media landscape.
As AI continues to reshape the dynamics of news gathering, production, and dissemination, the conversation underscored a critical point: ensuring that journalists possess the necessary skills, support, and freedoms is essential for the responsible use of these transformative tools. The urgent need for journalists to verify information, combat misinformation, and have the independence to make editorial choices was paramount in discussions.
Participants delved into the dual nature of AI, exploring its potential both as a tool for journalistic innovation and as a threat that generates fabricated content and may replace journalists’ roles. A pivotal moment of the summit came with the release of FAJ’s continental survey revealing that many journalists face precarious employment conditions, which not only threaten their safety but also impede their ability to report effectively in the public interest.

The dialogue highlighted a shared understanding among media professionals: while technology can enhance journalistic practices, it must never supersede the irreplaceable judgment, experience, and accountability that journalists provide. Trustworthy reporting relies heavily on journalists being able to work safely, earn fair wages, and maintain editorial independence.
Culminating in the development of the FAJ Advocacy Action Plan, this gathering reinforced commitments towards advancing decent work standards, promoting quality journalism, and harnessing AI’s capabilities responsibly across Africa. This strategic plan aims not only to protect journalists’ rights but also to ensure that the value of human integrity in journalism prevails amid the rise of AI technologies.
As the continent stands on the brink of a journalistic revolution, the FAJ’s bold vision paves the way for a media future that embraces innovation while steadfastly upholding the principles of quality journalism and the protection of those who serve as its guardians.
