The National Assembly has moved to monitor various ongoing road projects in the South East in a bid to ascertain their level of completion and quality of works done by the contractors, with special attention to the Onitsha–Enugu and Enugu-Makurdi roads.

Chairman, Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on Works, Hon Akinola Alabi disclosed this Friday evening when he led other members of committee on a courtesy visit to the Governor of Enugu state, Dr Peter Mbah in his office at the Government House, Enugu.

A Government House source reports that Hon Alabi who told Governor Mbah that they were in the state to carry out their oversight functions of the federal government projects under the ministry of works in the South East, expressed satisfaction and dissatisfaction with some of the projects.

The committee chairman further extolled Mbah for providing the enabling atmosphere for the contractors handling various ongoing federal government projects in the state.

Responding, Governor Mbah who described the committee as one of the most important committees in the Senate and House of Representatives, appealed that Enugu be given special attention as an administrative hub of the South East, saying road infrastructure remains the bedrock of every growing economy.

Commending the Federal Government for the interventions, Governor Mbah urged the contractors to increase their pace of work, noting that the state government intervened where there were obstructions in terms of Right of Ways and paid compensations.

He further asked the committee to intervene in order to fast track the Onitsha–Enugu and Makurdi-Enugu Expressways, as well as other interventions.
