The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has officially flagged off the inaugural Abia Para Badminton International Championship and the All Africa Para Badminton Championship in Umuahia, the state capital. Represented by his Deputy, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, who also chairs the main organizing committee, Dr. Otti highlighted the significance of the event, which is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation and organized under the auspices of the Para Badminton Confederation Africa.
Scheduled to run from September 30th to October 12th, 2025, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, the championship will bring together Para Badminton athletes from across Africa and beyond. Dr. Otti emphasized that the event is a celebration of resilience, unity, and the unbreakable human spirit, challenging stereotypes and inspiring individuals to dream bigger.
The Governor noted that true greatness is measured not by physical strength alone but by determination, courage, and the will to excel. He also underscored that the championship showcases Abia’s capacity, hospitality, and vision, demonstrating its readiness to lead Africa in inclusive sports development. Dr. Otti therefore encouraged the participating athletes to compete with pride, play fair, and inspire all.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, expressed gratitude to the Governor, the state government, and all stakeholders for their support in ensuring the success of the event. The championship was attended by notable dignitaries, including Mr. Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, and Mr. Samuel Ekeoma, National Chairman of Para Badminton and 2nd National Vice President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria.
