The Imo Footballers Legends Association has celebrated one of its legendary members, former Nigerian international and ex-African Footballer of the Year, Emmanuel Amunike, MFR, for his historic contribution to Nigeria’s football success at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The legends honoured Amunike for scoring the decisive golden goal against Argentina in the final of the men’s football event at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics, a victory that handed Nigeria its historic football gold medal and made the country the first African nation to win Olympic football gold. Cameroon later became the second African country to achieve the feat.
The celebration, which brought together former footballers and administrators from Imo State, was led by the President of the Imo Footballers Legends Association, Coach Chidi Ike, alongside former president Chasmir Mbachu, Coach Bahama Oparanozi, and other members of the association.
The group congratulated Amunike, an indigene of Eziobodo in Imo State and the state’s Sports Ambassador, describing him as an inspiration to younger generations and a worthy ambassador of Nigerian and African football.
The legends also acknowledged Amunike’s humility, generosity and his quiet efforts in supporting less-privileged members of society, describing his lifestyle as an example worthy of emulation.
Amunike, who was also the last player to win the African Footballer of the Year award while playing on African soil, was praised for his outstanding career, which included representing FC Barcelona.
The association further commended his commitment to the development of football in Imo State and prayed for God’s continued strength and wisdom as he contributes to efforts aimed at rebuilding Heartland FC into a formidable club capable of competing strongly in Africa.
Responding, Amunike expressed appreciation to the football legends for the honour and assured them that he would continue to encourage and support them.
He described the former players and football stakeholders as the backbone of football development in Imo State and Nigeria, stressing the need for experienced football personalities to continue contributing their knowledge to the growth of the game.
Amunike also urged young footballers to remain focused, work hard and strive for excellence in their careers, advising them not to depend entirely on others for their daily livelihood.
He encouraged the younger generation to develop themselves through discipline, commitment and hard work, noting that football could provide opportunities for a better future when approached with seriousness and dedication.
