The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, has rejected allegations that he linked the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Emetu’s office has dismissed the claims as “politically motivated” and lacking factual basis, emphasizing his commitment to governance and supporting Governor Otti’s reform agenda.

According to reports, Emetu’s office clarified that his comments were misrepresented, and he never made statements attributing Kanu’s detention to President Tinubu. The earlier report claimed Emetu stated that Abia State Government would mobilize its resources to teach President Tinubu a “bitter political lesson” in the 2027 general elections over Kanu’s detention.

The controversy surrounding Kanu’s detention has sparked widespread concern, with various groups calling for his release. The Abia State House of Assembly and the All Igbo Youth Forum have expressed concerns over his prolonged detention and alleged human rights violations. Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, facing charges related to treason and terrorism.

Emetu’s rejection of the allegations comes amid heightened tensions over Kanu’s detention, which has become a rallying point for pro-Biafra groups. The situation remains fluid, with supporters demanding his immediate release and trial. The Abia State Government has maintained its commitment to upholding the rule of law while ensuring the welfare of its citizens.
