The Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), South-East, Zone C, has called on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to fully activate its mandate by tapping into budgetary allocations and the region’s economic potential to confront the zone’s pressing challenges.
This formed part of resolutions reached at the end of the Council’s meeting held at Golphin Hotel, Awka, Anambra State, presided over by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku, and attended by chairmen and secretaries of the five state councils in the zone.
On regional governance and security, the Council urged the South-East Governors Forum to deepen collaboration among member states in order to attract federal projects and development partners, while also tackling the security threats confronting the region without further delay.
It further called on state governments to rehabilitate internal road networks, noting that doing so would ease pressure on major highways, improve rural-urban connectivity, and stimulate socio-economic activity across the zone.
The communique also addressed erosion and environmental concerns, urging governments at all levels to urgently release funds to check the menace of erosion ravaging parts of the South-East. Landlords were advised to embrace eco-friendly building practices, while residents were enjoined to keep their surroundings clean in the interest of public health and general prosperity.
The NUJ South-East ZEC said the resolutions reflect the union’s continued commitment to advocating for the development and wellbeing of the South-East geopolitical zone.
