The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone C (South East) has called for a comprehensive police investigation following a recent violent assault on political leaders, while simultaneously demanding stronger accountability from regional ethnic leadership.
The resolutions were reached during the South-East Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) meeting held last Thursday at the Golphin Hotel in Awka, Anambra State. Chaired by Zonal Vice President Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku JP, the session brought together council chairmen and secretaries from all five southeastern states to address pressing union matters and broader national security issues.
Demand for Investigation into Benue Violence
Top on the council’s agenda was the September 8, 2026 attack on Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), at Yelwata in Benue State. The council strongly condemned the incident, describing political violence as a threat to national stability.
ZEC formally called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift, thorough investigation and ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
Call for Ohanaeze Accountability
Turning its focus to regional governance and advocacy, the council voiced sharp concern over the perceived inactivity of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
ZEC urged the executive leadership, led by Senator John Azuta-Mbata, to break its silence on critical socio-economic and security matters affecting the South-East, pressing the leadership to actively champion solutions for Ndigbo.
Crackdown on Scrappers
The union also raised alarms regarding community-level security, specifically highlighting growing reports linking scrap metal collectors—locally referred to as “Iron Condemn”—to property theft and kidnapping syndicates.
To counter the trend, ZEC urged state governments, local councils, and community leaders to implement strict regulatory frameworks and deploy dedicated enforcement teams to sanitize the sector.
