Mpam Ancient Kingdom announces HRH Eze Ogbata coronation date as ‘Onuguotu II’

Mpam Ancient Kingdom, in Ekwerazu, Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, has officially announced the forthcoming Royal Coronation of His Royal Highness, Eze Leonard Chukwudi Ogbata (Onuguotu II) — an event expected to unite the people of Mpam, rekindle cultural pride, and attract dignitaries from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

In a press release signed by Nze Uchechi Obasi, Chairman, Coronation Central Planning Committee and Chief Iyke Anyanwu (Ikukundu), Chairman, Subcommittee on Media & Publicity,, the coronation is scheduled to hold on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Eke Mpam Market Square.

The release described the coronation as a cultural rebirth and a defining moment in the kingdom’s history, adding that the people of Mpam are already excited and standing firmly behind their Eze and the Mpam Progressive Union, pledging total support and loyalty ahead of the historic event.

“From the villages to the diaspora, Mpam sons, daughters, in-laws, friends, and well-wishers are rallying in unity for what is set to be one of the most significant cultural gatherings in Mbaise.

“The President General of the Mpam Progressive Union (MPU), Hon. Anthony Odom, and His Royal Highness, Eze Leonard C. Ogbata (Onuguotu II), have extended an open invitation to all well-meaning citizens to participate actively in the coronation”, the release stated.

The Planning Committee revealed that the event will also feature the recognition and honouring of several distinguished sons, daughters, and friends of Mpam for their outstanding contributions to community development, leadership, and cultural preservation.

It disclosed that the Coronation High Mass will be presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, C.M.F., Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara, adding a divine blessing to the proceedings.

The committee noted that preparations are in full swing, with subcommittees handling logistics, culture, security, and hospitality. A week-long series of cultural and social activities will precede the main event, including youth performances, traditional dances, women’s exhibitions, and a royal banquet.

According to the release, the “coronation of Eze Ogbata (Onuguotu II) mark a new era for Mpam Ancient Kingdom — a blend of heritage, faith, and vision for the future. It symbolizes a renewed commitment to peace, unity, and progress under a leader known for humility and community service”.
